The Quality of Life (QOL) project has been the major vehicle of the Noor Hussein Foundation for sustainable community development and capacity building at the grassroots level. Founded in 1989 with support from the World Health Organization (WHO), QOL developed innovative models to improve the overall quality of life of underprivileged communities and remote rural areas.
QOL's strategy emphasizes comprehensive development implemented by people themselves through social preparation and consensus building, community organization, community mobilization and training. The project employs a multifaceted approach to development that supports the economic, social and cultural needs of communities by integrating income-generating schemes with empowerment of local communities, incorporating elements of business development, health, and education.
QOL responds to peoples' needs by training and supporting them in the planning, management, and evaluation of their own development schemes. This is made possible by setting up grassroots development councils, micro-credit funds and technical support committees in each beneficiary area. These committees, with at least 45% female participation in each beneficiary area, assist in need identification, project implementation, democratic community participation, and social cohesion.
The project has introduced its development approach to 21 remote rural villages across Jordan, touching the lives of over 65,000 people to date, and directly benefiting more than 3,400 villagers.
QOL has earned international recognition from the United Nations
. As a result of this acclaim, NHF has worked with international agencies to share its successful approach with other nations. Over the past 15 years, more than 500 decision-makers and NGO's working in development in 15 Arab and Islamic countries have been trained on this sustainable comprehensive approach. Since 2004, specially designed training workshops have been continuously organized for Iraqi workers in Jordan.
